Lake Biwa is the largest among Japanese lakes. Various fish and birds live in and around Lake Biwa, including indigenous fish. Paddy fields have been developed around the lake and many rivers runs from it. The region around Lake Biwa is called Omi and is surrounded by mountains that are more than 1,000 meters high. Overall, the Omi region is a rich, natural country.

Based on these environments, an original culture has been developed in the Omi region. There are many temples and shrines around Lake Biwa. Sports on the lake such as yachting and boating are popular and rowing matches are held at many places. In addition, an original food culture has been developed in this region. Since the Omi region has many rural areas that are different from metropolitan areas such as Kyoto and Osaka, various traditional ways of life and old buildings have survived despite modernization.
